Covid-19 damages male reproductive function and lowers fertility: HKU

Covid-19 infection could impair men’s reproductive function, animal tests conducted at the University of Hong Kong show.
Researchers at the Department of Microbiology have found that the Covid-19 virus can cause degeneration of testicular tissue in hamsters.

Hamsters infected with the coronavirus developed chronic asymmetric testicular atrophy — decrease in size and weight of the testicles.

Reduced sperm count, inflammation, haemorrhage, and necrosis of the sperm cell-producing seminiferous tubules were also observed in the infected hamsters. Omicron and Delta variants were found to induce similar effects.

“It is important to be aware of possible hypogonadism (low sex drive) and subfertility,” said Chair of Infectious Diseases Professor Kwok-yung Yuen, who led the research effort. “Covid-19 vaccination can prevent this complication.”

Previous studies have reported testicular pain in Covid-19 patients. An autopsy study of human males who died from Covid-19 showed inflammation and cell damage in the testicles, though the virus was not always found in semen specimens.

The fact that Covid can live in the testicles raises the question of whether the virus could be transmitted through semen.

"It leads one to wonder whether this could have a long-term impact on fertility in men and women,” said Dr Brian McNeil, vice-chair of the Department of Urology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, with regards to a study suggesting that the testes may be a sanctuary for the coronavirus.
